Grimsby Institute College Magazine LIIAR

LIIAR Analysis:
L: The long shot of the casually posed male teenager is both striking and engaging and has been promoted to create a particular perception of the college amongst the reader, which is the brand image. The connotative meaning is clear through his confident yet relaxed pose; he feels happy in his college surroundings. The institution has tried to connote the relaxed clothing style of the student which the reader can relate to throughout their own cultural experiences which they bring to the text.
The masthead is a large dominant, bold icon which is noticed instantly using a simple yet striking font. On the contents page it gets over complicated with a lot more pictures and a strapline for every headline which cramps things a little. The blue, white and clear is a clear house-style which looks very cool and hip which would relate to the target audience and show that it is not just a boring college magazine. The contents page differs slightly and adds a lot more range of colours; this complicates the layout and does not help to fix the representation and brand image which is clear on the front cover.
The headline/strapline of the articles inside the magazine are very engaging and humorous with use of slang and alliteration. It can be read in different ways and is not what you would usually find on the cover of a college magazine. This continues into the contents page where witty statements are used on the headlines and straplines of the pages. Thumbnails are used which clearly illustrate other articles in the magazine although these aren’t very clear, a caption for some of the pictures could have helped to direct the reader.

I: The institutions that have produced the college magazine have thought clearly about a lot of things including the target audience, ident of the magazine and the brand image. The target audience is very similar to the one I am targeting in my college magazine, although I want to make sure I target the actual college and its courses alongside helping the students with their worries and issues.

I: The moral of the magazine is to leave with a better understanding of the issues they are facing and a feeling that they are not alone. The college magazine have made sure that the audience knows the magazine is aimed at them and not their parents or teachers therefore they can feel they can read it from their own point of view and personalise themselves with it.

R: the magazines have represented college students as a casual standardised stereotype, which is a safe option as this broadens the general target audience so everyone feel they can read the magazine without feeling like it is written for a certain person or group.
