LIIAR Analysis
L: The masthead should be the most dominant feature of the front cover and stand out; it should be a short memorable magazine title as well. “Student life” isn’t very striking or memorable. The main image is a long shot, the denotation of the college students is not a very positive one at all, it is all doom and gloom. The gloomy silhouettes go with the black background but it doesn’t embrace what a college magazine should portray. There is not a clear house-style colour scheme, the cover page is literally just black and white but the contents page suddenly introduces neon green which doesn’t really help to connect both of the pages together. There is a few thumbnail pictures on the contents page which illustrate the articles inside the magazine, there is no kind of caption which helps direct the reader to the page although the photos clearly indicate that they are education and at least have something to do with the magazine and not just randomly placed there. The magazine requires no price or barcode because it is free. The line ‘Media students in Berlin’ is used to tell us about the picture but it doesn’t give us much information about it like why they’re where in Berlin and what they were doing.
The layout is bland and simple; the only interesting thing to say is the curved edges of the contents page box which adds a young, urban feel. The text is like a normal contents page would look.
The fonts on the contents page and front cover are completely different, with one title being serif and the other being sans serif.
I: The institution of the college magazine would be East Riding College as they have produced it. The logo is situated quite largely on the cover page which helps us immediately recognise that this is the institution. Additionally another institute which could be related to a magazine would be its publisher however we know that the magazine was published within the college by the students as it tells us on the first main page.
I: The ideology of the magazine is not very clear at all, we can see that the institution have tried to generalise the information in the magazine making it a basic college magazine with no focus on one certain issue e.g. student finance. We could have worked out the ideas and attitudes expressed in the magazine through clear connotations, denotations and representations but there is nothing much to see apart from that it is a standard college magazine.
A: The magazine is aimed at students who attend the college and whom are looking for extra information and extra-curricular activities and trips etc.
R: The cover certainly doesn’t represent the students in a positive way, in fact they look very anti-social and unhappy and that the trip to Berlin wasn’t even that good as they look still and motionless and don’t even look like they are being educated. They all look like camera-shy teenagers with hoodies on which doesn’t represent the students or the college in a positive way and are just going with the dominant stereotype teenagers have always had.
